Documentary film project "Where the Bell Tolled against Nuclear Power" (Onde o Sino Tocou Contra o Nuclear)
Before Fukushima, March 11, 2011, Chernobyl, April 26, 1986 and Three Mile Island, March 28, 1979, there was Ferrel: On Monday March 15, 1976, at seven in the morning the lace maker Crealmina da Silva Belo in the coastal town of Ferrel struck the bells of the Nossa Senhora da Guia church like never before. In doing so, she is calling on people from Ferrel to oppose Portugal's first planned nuclear power plant. On foot, by donkey car, tractor, bicycle and trucks, the approximately 1500 inhabitants of Ferrel marched to the location of the plant nuclear power station and occupied it. Ferrel's farmers, fishermen and lace maker women started a movement, supported by local journalists and musicians, that stopped Portugal's nuclear energy plans from the beginning. The nuclear power plant of the German company Kraftwerk Union (KWU) was never built.
"Where the Bell Tolled against Nuclear Power" is the first short film project about a unique and successful story of civic courage in the far west of the European continent. In 2019, the Portuguese Parliament unanimously declared Ferrel in Peniche as „the Capital of the resistance against nuclear power“.
