‘When in Quarantine’ is a video art project that brings to life the thoughts and sensations of living through the COVID-19 lockdown, as experienced by two young artists.
Although going through the lockdown in different countries, at opposite ends of the European continent (Spain and Romania), Todica’s words and Garbea’s graphic interpretations come together in a coherent chain of feelings and reflexive questions.
During the creation process, there was little to no feedback between the two artists- the writer would send the sentences which the visual artist would illustrate, without discussing them.
In the end, the artists were faced with the surprise of creating something very true to both of them, an accurate depiction of their inner and outer reality.
We believe we are faced with a confirmation of the universality of the pandemic lockdown experience, indeed a zeitgeist of insecurity, boredom, self-reflection, but also hope and creative energy.

Mădălina Gârbea started her education with traditional drawing and graphic techniques and by the end of her studies became more interested in graphic design, editorial design and animation. In her Master’s degree she focused mainly on experimental animation and video art, but kept doing graphic design outside school.
Studying Fine Arts, she developed skills for concept development and transmitting a message in creative and visually-appealing ways. Over the years, she experimented with painting, drawing, engravings and photography. She developed an eye for clean aesthetics and a heart for impactful design, bringing her extensive experience with classical materials into the digital medium.
Her collaborator, Eva Todică, is a writer and visual artist, with broad artistic experience over different artistic mediums. Having known each other for years, their collaboration came naturally and from a place of respect and mutual love for artistic exploration.
