Generally speaking financial (market) repression is any policy that impedes the proper functioning of #capitalmarkets. In practical terms financial repression is a policy or action by #centralbanks that makes government issued #debt more attractive or that lowers the interest rate on government debt. This can be done by setting #capital requirements for major banks or #regulatoryrequirements for pensions that require minimum percentage holdings in government bonds. Central banks can also set caps on interest rates. These policies artificially lower #interestrates and #interest #payments for governments from where interest rates and payments would be if the #market was allowed to function without interference. It also functions as a #tax and #wealth transfer from savers/lenders/creditor to borrowers. Unlike austerity and tax increases, financial repression #taxes are often unnoticed by #society. #cfainstitute #caia #frm
