A group of Martha’s Vineyard students learned that several adults were proposing a ban on plastic water bottles for the island of MV. When the adults mentioned that they might wait a year, the students decided to start their own movement—Plastic Free MV! Every day at lunch and recess, they researched, made phone calls, wrote letters, and created brochures, flyers, Facebook and Instagram accounts. They also held public forums and met with business owners who were angered by the impacts the ban would have on them.

In just 6 months, the students created a new law that passed in West Tisbury on April 9, 2019, making it the first town in North America to ban the sale of single use plastic water and soda bottles. The neighboring towns of Chilmark and Aquinnah will vote in a few weeks.
