Piece of the global dance performed at the Voice of the River project event. This is prefaced by a short audience participation session to honor the many extinct stocks of salmon that lived nearby, prior to the 1940s when all salmon were blocked from the Columbia system in the US and Canada upstream of Grand Coulee dam. The global dance is a movement choir that is part of an international project called Global Water Dances (GWD) that happens every 2 years. Dancers around the world do this same dance. This performance of the global dance was done by a group of community dancers and was danced to celebrate efforts to bring salmon home to the people and forests of Washington, Idaho, and British Columbia. It reflects the great love the people in Spokane have for the Spokane River and included an opening ritual at the beginning of the VOR event to encourage healing of both the river and the community. The GWD and the entire program were aimed to create an embodied story of what the river would say through dance and spoken word. Our GWD event encourages the community to listen to what the rivers and land says to them and encourages environmental literacy about bringing salmon home, colonization, a water treaty excluding local tribes, the ongoing work of the first stewards, and how watering lawns takes water needed to sustain instream flows needed to sustain aquatic life.
