This study is an example of a mid-level of interactivity, which I describe as incidental interaction.
Incidental interactivity is a paradigm where the VR environment and/or audio-visual objects are responsive in nature, but this responsivity is largely transparent to the participant.
An example of such a system would be audio-visual objects that change their spectral content based on the participants viewing angle, viewing height, movement speed etc. The participant may perceive that changes are occurring within the VR environment but may or may not connect these changes to their specific actions and, even if such action-reaction linkages are perceived, may not be consistently repeatable or ‘learnable’.
In such an environment, the participant’s role is still largely that of active observer, as no form of interaction can be mastered and wilfully executed. To explore this paradigm, a realistic audio-visual environment is presented and then gradually populated with a series of abstract audio-visual object, triggered by the participant’s proximity to certain locations within the VR environment. Once these objects have been triggered, their audio-visual parameters are modulated via the participant’s viewing angle. These interactions are semi-transparent in nature and any synchronicity could be perceived as coincidental in nature.
