1.a – In this section of the film, it is quite evident that the yellow team have effective verbal communication, which then leads to an example of fluent team cohesion. The positive team cohesion (strategy and tactics, team classification (c. Forrest 2015)) is expressed as the play sequence seems fluent and as if the team members involved are ‘on the same page’. Verbal communication plays an underlying role in this success, as I am rushed by Sophie, Todd yells, “yep” and as I look up, I can see he is unmarked in his play space. I pass to Todd and then Todd gets rushed and passes to Matt who is using a low posture with his arms reached out communicating that he wants the ball. Todd then uses the action rule ‘always follow your pass’ and becomes the reserve for Matt, who then finds Todd in the best shooting position; at the top of the key with a right-hand angle shot.
1.b – In this next section, we can see a slight drop in concentration for the yellow team after the turnover. It is quite visual straight away that there is a lack of a structured game play configuration (GPC) in defence, as yellow have their heads down, aren’t communicating on the transition and aren’t actively looking for any cue recognitions (such as gabby exploding and Baillie running into unmarked territory). If yellow were actively seeking these cues, I would argue that they might be more wary of the attacking side and would be able to prevent the ball from going to Baillie into space. There was a chain reaction in this sequence, there was no verbal communication, which lead to a poor recognition of attacking cues, which subsequently lead to a detrimental GPC.
1.c – This section of the film demonstrates yellow team’s successful completion of a strategy that we had in place; a three-person weave. Our main strategy was to hit the middle, then find space on the wings to move the ball through the depth and width of the court. Matt starts towards the middle of the court, and hits Heather on one wing, who then switches it to Lucy on the other wing. The ball was transitioned up the court in 3 passes resulting in a score, as the defensive team were still scrambling off the turnover. This is a prime example of the movement skill action of spatial awareness (f. Forrest 2015), as all 3 players moved to their correct positions to receive an unmarked pass. The team demonstrates a positive example of the decision-making aspect ‘what – where are the numbers’, as they can scan the play space and see that they have an advantageous force ratio on the transition.
