Taumanu, DEMO Gallery, 21 Shaddock St, Eden Terrace, Auckland. 16 - 18 May 2019
As the second of eight in the DEMO 1.0 Season, Taumanu asserts an act of king possession of the DEMO gallery space, prior to its demolition. The exhibition by Hohua Thompson, Kahurangiariki Smith, Maia Wharewera-Ballard, and J.A. Kennedy uses institutional critique and decolonial strategies to question the default position of the "white cube" as a venue for art and cultural discourse.

In the tidal shift there is an urgency, whether understood as trough or crest, the invisible shift exists, predictable in moment and time. We descend the stairs into a future. Left to be washed over by the tide, becoming part of, a holding on the experience of shifting contexts. The surrounding become part of the self , holding what once enveloped. Never neglecting the space in its past tense, even thought t is not currently high tide on the flats.
