The music video '3' was born from the long-lasting artistic partnership between the video maker Piero Fragola and the painter Matteo Giampaglia. Such collaboration has lead to realize many videos through the creative exploration of different animation techniques which elaborate the methodologies of stop-motion, between mise en scene and painting, between analog materiality and digital languages.
For the track '3' by Under-Tones, which touches the emotional chords of introspection and harmony in a delicate and intimate dimension, the two artists wanted to evoke a chromatic tension played by a fine balance, and extensive pictorial matter. This is a melodic song written in an electronic mode which gives a geometric and nearly mechanical form to the romantic spirituality.
3 is the perfect number according to the Pythagorean school; it is the synthesis of even (2) and odd (1) and the first surface, the triangle. For the ancient Chinese culture, the 3 is perfect, since it is the number of the total cosmic totality: sky, earth, man. Symbolic and magic meanings have been attributed to the number 3 in every culture and age. In religions, divine triads are frequent, from the Hindu Trimurti (Brahma, Shiva, Vishnu) to the Christian Trinity.
By interpreting this evocation in a more modern perspective, Piero Fragola & Matteo Giampaglia creates a landscape of pure shapes, where the material consistency of painting donates a concrete, three-dimensional texture to the animated figures.
The story starts with the rise of a distant sun, non-terrestrial, a synthesis of light and color into a geometric element; the sphere is a motor-star which activates the next composition.
The inspiration is the triadic ballet by Oskar Schlemmer, Bauhaus artist, who reinvented the dance by elaborating the shapes of the flexuous movement of the human body in a stylized coordination of robotic geometries, by emphasizing the three-dimensional character of the dancing figures and their costumes. The surreal subjects of the avant-garde ballet dance on the hymn of a far constellation through the trait of the brushstrokes.
