Founded in 1967 by Birgit Cullberg, Cullberg is an internationally renowned contemporary dance company. Their repertoire is regularly enhanced by new works by international choreographers commissioned especially for the company such as, most recently, Ian Kaler’s production ›ON THE CUSP‹ shown at PACT in 2019. Now it’s the turn of Swedish choreographer, Alma Söderberg, another artist who has long been closely associated with PACT. Her unique sensitivity in creating extraordinary sensory experiences that interweave movement, rhythm and voice was most recently demonstrated here with ›Entangled Phrases‹ (2019) and ›Deep Etude‹ (2018). Alma’s collaboration with Cullberg is her first with a large ensemble. In ›The Listeners‹ she focuses on the act of listening. Do we hear for ourselves? Or do we listen together? And when do we hear each other? In collaboration with nine dancers, she explores the act of listening as an individual practice, a shared experience and a form of mutual perception. Sounds and movements create knots and entanglements that feedback off each other to ultimately produce a situation where the skill of paying attention is practiced on all sides. A shared space opens up between the performers and the audience - a space to listen, contemplate and perceive.
