Our societies, institutions and social fabric are currently in the early stages of the third revolution of humanity, the #DigitalCivilRevolution. And the magic word is disruption. The same technologies that cause and fuel this revolution in markets are giving citizens more knowledge and information, more public and political influence, and tools to organize themselves. With one main effect: to disrupt politics, democracy and public services. It also totally transforms the media landscape, public opinion, political debate, and the roles of industry and the state toward citizens.
At the end of November 2018, a unique book was published that defines this new phase in humanity as the ‘digital civil revolution’. A book that explores its impact, the underlying technology and trends, as well as the special kind of civil leadership needed to harness this new citizen power. A power that is already disrupting the public domain. The book is called 'Civil Leadership as the Future of Leadership’ (subtitled 'Harnessing the disruptive power of citizens’).
From the moment that the book was written and ready to be published, we saw the sudden rise of a movement called yellow vests in France. We witnessed a young 29-year-old American woman named Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez going from Twitter-queen to becoming the youngest (and most outspoken) Democratic member of the House of Representatives. And we were amazed by Dutch historian Rutger Bregman who used his speaking time at the World Economic Forum in Davos to lambaste the rich attendees for failing to talk about the one thing he thought could fight wealth inequality: raising taxes for the rich. The video of his speech went viral.
The man who in his book predicted what would happen in these revolutionary times is Steven P.M. de Waal, PhD, a Dutch strategic consultant, entrepreneur, philanthropist and chairman of multiple non-executive boards. Dr. De Waal’s writing focuses on strategic thinking, practical wisdom for executives and social entrepreneurship. He launched one of the first think tanks in the Netherlands, Public Space, which aims to develop strategies for the common good. And on top of that, he is a great inspirational storyteller, whose aim is to stimulate the strategic intelligence of the administrators, executives and social entrepreneurs in the public domain, across the globe.
Now it is time for visionary Dr. de Waal to take his stories abroad. He already is invited to address his favorite executive audiences in New Zealand, the USA and Finland. He especially values the chances his lectures offer to starting a dialogue and debate about the leadership challenges faced by all members of his audience.
