This fragment is of an hour-long performance lecture which responds to the chapter ‘Whole Wounds’ in Peggy Phelan’s book Mourning Sex and the themes she explores of substitution, redemption and the body after death. This is situated in dialogue with Foucault’s understanding of the ‘stand-in’ and his exploration of optics. The piece is currently a semi-improvised performance between White and dance artist/musician Tyrone-Isaac Stuart. The work grapples with the tension between bodies and objects, a confrontation with the loss of bodies, and our inability to prevent this loss. The work’s precariousness and intimacy is a tense and acutely physical exploration of the emotional and bodily experience of live improvisation with another body, and a spontaneous navigation of the embodiment and inter-relationality between word and movement.
