What is the purpose of this exercise?
To improve the ability to extend (arch) the thoracic spine or upper back. Or more simply put – to improve our ability to reverse out of a slouched upper back position
Why would you utilize it?
Thoracic extension is of great importance for a variety of movements – without adequate range here we will be unable to fully raise our arms overhead (as the spine naturally archs slightly at the end of overhead movement) and unable to have full cervical spinal motion (as part of all cervical movements come from movement at the thoracic spine)
Improving thoracic extension can also be immensely valuable for a wide range of pain conditions including shoulder, neck and lower back pain.
