This silent narrative follows young Ludwig van Beethoven as he writes his Sonata "Quasi una Fantasia", now popularly known as the Moonlight Sonata. Entwined in this story is his infatuation with Countess Guilietta Guicciard, which is vexed by her father. The audio track is a piano rendition of the romantic 1st Movement and fiery 3rd movement of this well known classical composition (Sonata #14 in C# minor). The film begins with John Potente performing the sonata in a cottage house on a small private wildlife sanctuary on Long Island, New York. It is played on a 1929 Knabe baby grand in unrestored condition, delivering notes from 90 year old piano strings, adding an air of antiquity to it's sound. The film flashes back, throughout the piano performance, to young Ludwig and Giulietta as they struggle with their attraction for one another in Vienna, Austria at the turn of the nineteenth century. This film offers a cinematographic opportunity to get a sense of the conditions under which young Beethoven wrote this piece of classical music, dedicated over 200 years ago to a love of his life.
