This experimental edit explores the possibilities of 360° videos to rearrange films and their frames through a spatial montage, against the limits of linear film editing.

Based on Sergei Eisenstein’s essay The Dynamic Square from 1931 this VR-video reflects on the structure of Andrei Tarkovsky’s The Mirror.
Tarkovsky’s art film gets detached from its original frame and placed with the dynamics of the 360° video into a spatial arrangement. Because of its fragmented narrative with a combination of childhood memories, dreams and news footage as well as unpredictable color shifts this movie is the perfect body to experiment on. The film images are placed in different ways, contradicting and complementing each other. This should evoke new associations about the relationship between the film plot itself and the director’s motivations and decisions.

an important factor for the flexibility of the frames here is the choice of the viewer, where to navigate through space, which is in proportion to the subtle movement of the individual screens. the essayistic character also results from the sound level, in which various interviews with Tarkovsky about his relationship to art are montaged. The original sound is in Russian and refrains from subtitles in any way, in order to not disturb the immersive effect of the images, and not to affect the viewer in his choices.

a collage is created, which tries to perceive the 360° video as an innovation in the field of explanatory films and videographic essays by bringing together individual audio and film fragments into a spatial relation. not only cinema should be more flexible when it comes to its shapes and frames but the form in which we analyze movies should be too.
