Malaria is an illness spread by mosquito bites that kill almost a million people every year, and 90% of the worldwide deaths occur in Sub Saharan Africa. The bright side is that it’s entirely preventable.
However, the prevention of mosquito bites depends on people’s willing participation.
And the methods that are used currently by the WHO, like treating water sources with pesticide or urging people to use nets, disrupt their everyday habits. To encourage individual action, we needed to find a solution that would fit seamlessly into their lives.
So WHO introduced the Life! project. We focused on a common tradition that many SubSaharan Africans share: body painting. It’s a daily ritual that they believe will keep them safe from harm.
We then partnered with OFF! spray to create a special body paint infused with active mosquito repellant. We distributed this body paint to people across the region to combine their existing traditions with malaria control. As a result, their own rituals became actual defense mechanisms that protect them from the risk of deadly disease.
