In 1992, the Portuguese artist Espiga Pinto made Mapa da memória inicial (Map of the Initial Memory), a solar system cast in bronze, shaped according to the theories of symbolic geometry once revealed to him by the modernist master José de Almada Negreiros. The Golden Record is a video installation based on an animated photograph of Pinto’s public sculpture, that rotates endlessly to the sound of sixteen voices. The circular movement of this monumental disk reveals an invisible object at the surface of the screen; a “ninth planet” that, in a computer calculated course, collides with mathematically aligned stars, leaving a helicoidal trail in its eccentric orbit.
