A new tap program promotes self-expression, sisterhood among inmates. “It’s just not something that we get to do, just to kind of be silly,” said 37-year-old Stephanie Pollock of Dunkirk. “You get to relax. ... It’s a way for us to forget where we are.”
The thought of going to prison conjures up images of uncomfortable routine and restriction, including confinement to a cell for long periods of time. Even recreation time offered outside has its limits.
But 15 inmates at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville are discovering an unexpected type of freedom through movement — and it comes with tap shoes.
