My animations from Netflix + director Alison Klayman's (The Brink, Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry) Take Your Pills.

Thoughts on these animations:

In designing the animations for Peter's Story in Take Your Pills, I wanted to create a unique look—one that had the cartoonish roundness of a story told from memory, mixed with the realistic frenetic stress of the corporate world.

The first and most important leap was to use the anonymity of our character as an aesthetic choice: by making the figures in this live action / 3D animation wear mosaically blurred masks, as if they were already designated as faceless in this world.

Of course, I also wanted to make it entertaining and somewhat surreal—amusing, without distracting from the severity of the issue. People are playing with these drugs as if it's all a game, but behind the game there are flesh-and-blood humans at risk—though the management in the story doesn't see it that way. It was important to highlight how the employees are seen as small cogs: just another computer, essentially, lost in the enormity of the financial market.

The first image I had in mind was the tossing of a blue pill into the pixelated anonymous face mask that Peter wears, as if it was absorbed in almost an 8-bit game style. This game feeling continues in his search for a doctor that will prescribe Adderall to him, and the morphing of a spreadsheet into a mosaic face mask.

The freedom that came with working with just a voiceover was really incredible. I was also very excited how open Alison Klayman and Motto Pictures were to my ideas, as most documentary animation work tends to be conservative.
