Stretching is a great way to loosen up tight muscles, wake up sleepy tendons, and warm up creaky joints. It can be used as part of a warm up before physical activity, after a movement session to help the body cool down, during the day to keep the body supple between bouts of prolonged sitting, or before a meeting or exam to wake up the brain and get energy flowing.
Stretching does not have to be a complex sequence of coordinated movements. Listen to the body and stretch what is tight. Some days it may be the shoulders and hips from long hours spent slumped over a laptop. Other days it may be the quads and hamstrings from a long run.
Consistently taking time to stretch will keep the body agile and will reduce the chance of injury. It will also improve mobility at the joints, which will enable proper alignment when doing a variety of movements.
Make stretching a habit. Find ways to include just 5-10 minutes a day to stretch what is tight. Stretching is a classic example of doing a little over the long term having a huge impact on overall health and movement.
