Brazilian Carnival is well known around the world, but it's most common image is attached to Rio's monumental parades. In the streets around the country, however, people live carnival in many different ways. I wanted to show my city's unique street carnival scene, which has maybe become it's most rich cultural, political and artistic expression over the last years, attracting thousands of people.
Belo Horizonte's street carnival started as a political movement and grew into a strong, joyful shout for freedom and minority rights, as well as a rich musical and fashion expression. In an experiment with illustration and animation, I portrayed a group of characters representing a typical carnival "bloco", trying to give the viewer the feeling of being there, dancing and recording from a phone.
