Everyone knows how passionate surfers can be about their sport. One French student found himself confined to his apartment. As in many places, residents of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia are under “stay at home” orders because of the coronavirus pandemic. But that didn’t stop Thomas Cervetti from finding a unique way to share his love of surfing.
Using a stop motion animation technique, Thomas used his surfboard and pieces of fabric to mimic surfing the waves of the ocean. He titled his video “Surf Trip in Homenesia.”
Stop motion animation works like it sounds: A single picture is taken. Then the set is moved ever so slightly. Another picture is taken, and so on. When strung together as a video, the single images create the illusion of movement.
Cervetti said the video took four days to shoot. It was made for the World Surf League’s “home break challenge,” which encourages avid surfers to create the illusion of surfing, from home.
“I got the chance to surf incredible places in South East Asia but I am also shocked by the plastic pollution. That’s why I am picking up trash at the end of the video,” Cervetti said.
