Stellar Corpus (Preview / Work in Progress, 2018)

Stellar Corpus is a digital art meets live performance musing on the levity and gravity of the human body performing in space, set to original music by Moby. Created by Dr. Sarah Jane Pell, Dr. Richard Move, David Barnes, Daniel Waghorn and the MIVP (Monash Immersive Visualization Platform) team at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

Stellar Corpus, a live and mediated performance, previewed in August of 2018 at MIVP’s CAVE2. Pell, wearing a MOCAP suit, transmitted live movement data to her stellar avatar which danced, in real time, amidst six more pre – recorded avatars, all projected simultaneously within CAVE2, that encircled her live performance. Stellar Corpus could be viewed and experienced by the audience in three ways. First, a spectator could observe with 3D glasses while standing still or while walking around the circumference of CAVE2. Second, the spectator could view the work without this 3D augmentation. Thirdly, a spectator anywhere in the world could experience Stellar Corpus wearing a VR headset because Pell herself wears a VR headset during her performance. Pell’s own perspective, while surrounded by her live and pre – recorded stellar avatars, could be livestreamed anywhere in the world via VR. Stellar Corpus marked the first time that live motion-capture data was streamed through the UNITY platform to the CAVE2’s patented immersive visualization environment. A technological breakthrough that was prompted by Pell and Move proposing the idea, and the MIVP team responding by hacking the platforms and authoring new code to realize the vision.
