"New Year’s Eve 1922 – a thousand-seater wooden theatre-temple with beautiful twin domes, nearing completion in the foothills of the Jura mountains in Switzerland, burns down in one night, destroyed by arson. This is the Goetheanum, the centre of Rudolf Steiner’s spiritual movement, Anthroposophy.

Steiner breaks away from Theosophy, the influential movement of Madam Blavatsky and Annie Besant, in 1908, refusing to recognise the young Krishnamurti, ‘Star of the East,’ as the risen Christ. Steiner instead turns to the west, attempting to found a new ‘mystery school,’ which will make available to all, in a modern form, the ancient secret wisdom taught in Babylon, Egypt, Greece, Palestine.

Steiner’s quest brings him into direct conflict with the German authorities, as he attempts to interrupt the Kaiser’s march to destruction. It brings the condemnation of the Catholic Church, which calls down fire on the Goetheanum.

But Steiner is assisted by remarkable women – his wife, the actress Marie Von Sivers, the English sculptor Edith Maryon, the unstoppable Doctor Ita Wegman.

Their loyalty to Steiner keeps them loyal to each other until his death makes them adversaries, who tear apart the movement.

Even so, the influence of Anthroposophy persists – in theatre practise, in education, in agriculture and every other sphere of culture and politics, inspiring the present adventure which is STEINER."
