This is my FX Reel for the Netflix Animated movie Next Gen. I worked under Incendii Visual Effects alongside Tangent Animation. The FX in this film were nominated for an Annie Award under the category "Outstanding Achievement for Animated Effects in an Animated Feature Production" along side Pixar Animation Studios , Walt Disney Animation Studios, Sony Pictures Animation , and Aardman Animations.

My role on this film was really expansive and about a third of it was not seen on screen in the traditional sense. Tangent Animation needed preset shaders that their artists could easily drop in for smoke/fire/explosions. I used a custom write of Blender to develop the various types of shaders - which they made easy for me as they worked very similar to that of Vray's volume shader builder.

The other undertaking I took on was creating drag and drop generic dust hits, ground hits, ground wash, and various size atmospherics that could fill a general area or 100 meter^2 area to fog an environment. For these I predominantly used Houdini as it was much quicker and easier to compress the VDB sizes down to keep their fidelity. The same goes for the dust wave shot. Houdini made it really easy to take a scale city and do a dust wave - where as using FumeFX proved slow and the file sizes were just too big.

Lastly, for thruster shots, I used FumeFX only because of experience and in my initial setups the look was pretty spot on, so I stuck with it. However, as FumeFX create file sizes that are usually bloated, everything was run through my Volume Compression setup in Houdini to reduce file sizes upwards to 90%.

Working with Tangent Animation was a joy. They are the nicest group of people and had great communication!
