What does it mean to be-loss? what does it mean to be-long? Stand In Still is a short performance Video Art piece that explores the journey of loss and belonging where moments of epiphany are had. The video uses movement ‘dance’ and visual installation to tell the stories of three queer Jamaicans on a journey to realization, It's only together that they realize a sense of self actualization and are “found”. Unseen, unheard and unaware of the vastness of self they undergo the truthfulness of struggle, resentment, anxiety, fear and hope, uncovering that to belong is to be loss and to be loss was only their first steps to the doorway to belong. The stories capture the reality of being an outcast in a society where discrimination severs the voices of the young black queer community from that of their homes, challenging the concepts of space/time/place and equality. The film places the audience to question the concept of HOME. It dissects the gaze of body with the use of mild nudity to strip the ideas of representation steering the narrative towards disrupting that which is beyond the assumed identities of gender and sexuality. Demanding that we interrogate what usually masks our ability to see black queer bodies as human and this is the veil of our taught and packaged ideals of desire. Must the black queer Caribbean body not be seen, heard or treated as human despite the false colonial psyche that has the outside and internalized worlds of ourselves have us not be treated as welcoming. The moment truths manifest Is not a destination but the observed quest for the trio deeply seeking to be loved and to rest in a place/space or environment called HOME? This journey from loss to belonging... the moment one recognises one belongs is the response/reaction of an epiphany.
