A short trailer of the video/performative action "Supporting the Look", part of the research project "Hacking Monuments" by Simona Da Pozzo, curated by Marco Izzolino.

The Nile is constantly surrounded by people. Passers-by, of course, but especially many groups of tourists and schoolchildren, introduced very briefly by pious guides in the history of the monument. They all stop in front of the monument: only those who stop at the tables of the nearby bar, sometimes observe the statue and go from behind. A still and white point in the bustle of Spaccanapoli. Seeing the Nile alone is a night event, which happens when tourists, exhausted, sleep. We have to wait for a late hour, when the inhabitants come back from the evening's plastering. Better than Monday or Tuesday.
The Nile makes you think of a tooth, a molar to be precise, where the details, the drilling, the silver, the various pastes and the enamel mix in the most mimetic way possible, in the attempt to resist to the wear. Here, perhaps, it is the wear and tear of the eyes, rather than that of the weather or of the daring restorations, that makes the big voice as if the thousands of quick glances of the tourists were affecting not only the sense and the history of the monument, but also its presence, its monumentality.
Then perhaps, in order to bring to light the spectre that inhabits that marble, it is necessary to observe it in the dark, like the photographs that slowly develop in the darkroom. Observe it at night, using, like a dentist, those mirrors at the tip of a stick that extend into the cavities to better identify in the interstices of residues or wounds: a mold, a little rain, a deflated balloon or a cigarette. Traces of yesterday's time to hack the monument in an ephemeral action.

Il Nilo è continuamente circondato da gente. Passanti, certo, ma sopprattutto tanti gruppi, di turisti e di scolaresche, introdotti brevissimamente da pie guide nella storia del monumento. Si fermano tutti davanti: solo chi si sofferma ai tavolini del bar lì vicino, ogni tanto osserva la statua e il via vai da dietro. Un punto fermo e bianco nel viavai di Spaccanapoli. Vedere il Nilo da solo è un fatto notturno, che accade quando i turisti, stremati, dormono. Bisogna attendere un'ora tarda, quando gli abitanti rincasano dall'intallio serale. Meglio di lunedì o martedì.
Il Nilo fa pensare a un dente, a un molare per la precisione, dove i dettagli, le trapanature, l'argento, le varie paste e lo smalto si mescolano nel modo più mimetico possibile nel tentativo di resistere all'usura. Qui forse è l'usura dello sguardo, più che quello degli agenti atmosferici o dei restauri arditi, a fare la voce grossa come se le migliaia di occhiate veloci dei turisti intaccassero non solo il senso e la storia del monumento, ma anche la sua presenza, la sua monumentalità.
Allora forse, per far rinvenire lo spettro che abita quel marmo, bisogna osservarlo al buio, come le fotografie che si sviluppano lentamente nella camera oscura. Osservarlo quindi di notte, usando, come un dentista, quegli specchi in punta a una bacchetta che si prolungano nelle cavità per meglio individuare negli interstizi dei residui o delle ferite: una muffa, un poco di pioggia, un palloncino sgonfio o una cicca. Tracce del tempo di ieri per hackerare il monumento in una azione effimera.
