a slowing forced by nature. New York’s late lights
dissolve into the dusky Catskills scape
and my allegiance switches quick, plays out
on split screen. But the scenes conflate on certain
heavy mornings, the paper dense with columns of obits.
Low word counts for most. For some a major spread.
When I read of the last of the Big Six, I held my son.
Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Together we
cradle the words, tuck them into a prayer.
