Experience special moments from the building dedication ceremony for Wilhelmina Reuben Cooke '67. On Friday, September 24, 2021, Duke University held a building dedication ceremony officially naming the Sociology-Psychology Building on West Campus after Reuben-Cooke.

The Reuben-Cooke Building is a fitting tribute for Professor Reuben-Cooke’s leadership as one of the first five Black undergraduates at Duke, her extraordinary career as an attorney, law professor, and university administrator, and her long service as a trustee of both Duke University and The Duke Endowment.

On September 26, 2020, the Duke Board of Trustees voted to rename the Sociology-Psychology Building for Wilhelmina Reuben-Cooke — one of the university's first five Black undergraduate students.

During her time at Duke, Reuben-Cooke was active in the civil rights movement, including protesting in Durham and Chapel Hill and signing an open letter against the memberships of key Duke administrators and faculty members at the then all-white Hope Valley Country Club.

After graduating in 1967, she went on to an extraordinary career as an attorney, professor of law, and senior administrator at Syracuse, Georgetown, and the University of the District of Columbia.

Reuben-Cooke also made significant contributions to Duke as a member of the Board of Trustees from 1989-2001 and served as a trustee of the Duke Endowment until her passing in 2019.

In 2011, she was honored with the Duke University Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor granted by the Duke Alumni Association.
