A participatory performance

ABOUT:
This performance video was a social experiment. The gloves were designed as a visual representation of the invisible bond between two participants. The participants were asked to be in an arm-wrestling position; each with their right arm on the table, their elbows bent and their hand gripping onto each other's hand.
As shown in the video, the participants were encouraged to react to the word they heard. They were instructed to try to move their arm to the ‘winning’ arm wrestle position if they believed that the word represents them more than the other person. Equally, they should try to move their arm to the ‘losing’ arm wrestle position if they think that the word represents the other person more than them.
By taking part in the action of almost like ‘pining’ the opposition’s arm down or vice visa; it signified the flow of a power struggle between the people involved. The aim was not about winning but to allow the participants to express their feeling and at the same time, to understand their opposition’s feelings. Bear in mind, it is inevitable that one of the participants will be stronger than the other, so this piece also examines how the person ‘in power’ may compromise and allow the ‘weaker’ to have a voice too. At the end of the experiment, the participants were encouraged to share and discuss their thoughts before and after the experiment to see if there were any surprises or differences from their initial thoughts.
