Salt and Stone is a movement and visual poem to my home in
the south, a meditation on different parts of this area, and an
exploration as to the changing ways we experience our bodies
in an ecosphere that has been irrevocably changed by
humans. I am interested in developing work that is specific to
the place where I live, creating performances that teach me
more about my new home, and building a body of work that
contests negative and misinformed stereotypes about
Southern culture and creativity. Many parts of Georgia are
named for the natural resources deemed to be useful and
profitable. This film features recent secret performances at
Sweetwater State Park in Lithia Springs (named for the natural
healing salts found in the water and the site of ruins of a
cotton mill destroyed during the Civil War) and Arabia
Mountain Natural Heritage Area, Lithonia (meaning “city of
stone,” a unique protected area that has taken 400 million
years to form and prized for its granite). I am exploring the
natural and human history of these spaces, the possibility for
value beyond consumption of these resources, and a pathway
of healing and transformation. Through butoh and text, this
piece explores "the morning after," and a possible pathway to
hope and transformation on the other side.
