This video collages together footage and audio from my Sago Plastico performance series.
In Sago Plastico, I used video, sound art, and movement to fragment a traditional movie script I wrote into a recurring garden series. The script, which tells the story of female plants under an oppressive male gardener’s supervision, is delivered in dispersed components(oral dialogue, bodily movement, music and landscape). The plants’ elementary choreography, which responds to the gardener character’s voice in the misaligned audio, conveys the ease of being directed over self-directing. Sago Plastico explores the comforts of following someone else’s purpose over one’s own, and the difficulty of outgrowing these comforts.
The silent film I shot of human characters and plants is projected behind the live performance. Although still misaligned with the dialogue’s timing, the projected video represents an additional means of communication for the plants. As the projected video begins to provide context to the movement and sound, the plants outgrow their dependence on the comforts of living by their supervisor’s agenda.
