Leona Cichy is enjoying putting down roots and spreading her wings in west Central Minnesota…

Leona: “It’s definitely very different here than living in New Jersey. My best friend from kindergarten moved to New York Mills and I was devastated. I came out that winter to visit her in the middle of nowhere and thought, ‘Why would anyone live here?’

And over the years, we kind of just stayed best friends, and I continued to visit the area. In 2014, I came out for my best friend’s wedding and I met one of the groomsmen and we started dating. Four years later, I just got married to the man that I met at that wedding and still have my best friend here and I’ve actually got my entire family living out here now. It’s been a crazy ride, but I absolutely love living here and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Growing up, I was a dancer. I kind of found Yoga as a replacement for dance as I moved into my adult life. And I considered doing a Yoga teacher training for years and it actually wasn’t until I moved out to Minnesota that I found the perfect opportunity to do so.
I signed up for the teacher training and I completed that in February of 2017 and after that I launched my Yoga business, Roots and Wings Yoga. I started teaching outdoor Yoga classes in Perham and from there I started renting this studio space on Main Street in Perham.

So, I try to combine outdoor experiences with indoor classes as much as I can in my Yoga business, and I like to offer lots of different activities that can kind of go along with Yoga and get people out in nature experiencing the world around them.

The one thing that I definitely don’t miss is traffic. Here traffic basically consists of, us maybe getting stuck, behind a tractor.

I also work over at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club as their Program and Resource Coordinator and that position has really allowed me to see just how much this community can come together and show its support for different causes.

One of the biggest differences, and things that I have loved learning about moving out here, is just the sense of how much a small community can come together and make a difference to make this place better for everybody else that lives here.”
