This male corkwing wrasse (Symphodus melops) has worked hard to build his impressive nest and now appears to be reaping the rewards. Two different females approach the nest and are ready to lay their eggs. They have much less vibrant colouration than the male and a very prominent blue egg-laying papilla. We assumed that eggs were deposited during the females’ quick ‘swirls’ in the nest, followed by fertilisation by the male, but were surprised by the brevity of the action and apparent reluctance of the male. Our slight doubts about the proceedings arise because a small proportion of corkwing males are actually ‘sneakers’, disguised as females in order to gain access to eggs laid in the nests of conscientious homebuilder males. Could one of these ‘females’ actually be a sneaker?
