‘Rise and Grind’ embodies the Cafe-Bar coffee dispenser from the Powerhouse Collection, in a competitive, fast-paced, touch screen game located within the museum space. Targeted towards school-aged children and teenagers, this experience aims to engage students in a fun, playful, and competitive environment that brings life to the gallery space. It aims to generate an unseen perspective on the social influence of the Cafe-Bar coffee dispenser and explore the long-lasting impacts this technology has had on Australian society.

‘Rise and Grind’ turns the functionality of the coffee dispenser into a game. Students are placed into a narrative centred around a 1970s style office - they’ve got just 2 minutes until the daily office briefing, and have to see how many coffees they can make before 9am. Players can verse each other in a timed, action-packed, full-body immersive game, tapping dials on the touch screen interface to release coffee, milk, and sugar from the Cafe-Bar dispenser. They then have to blow on a sensor to cool the coffee down before it’s completed. ‘Rise and Grind’ aims to incite excitement, conversation, and engagement with the object and each other through immersing students in a playful environment. The game aims to highlight not only the machine's functionality but also its significant impact on social interactions and coffee culture in Australia.

This design is part of the student learning experience in 87009 or 87445 VC Design Studio: Visualising Experience Spring 2021 in the Faculty of Design Architecture and Built Environment (DAB) University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and is not a professional design outcome. This project was developed under the guidance of studio leaders and demonstrators. As a response to a notional assessment brief, it is not directly connected to the Powerhouse Museum.
