Doctrine: Saving Faith

Three ways the Bible uses the word “faith”:
1. “The” faith (Jude 3)
2. Living Faith (Acts 11:24; 2 Cor. 5:7; Heb. 11:1)
3. Saving Faith (Rom. 3:23-26, Gal. 2:16, Eph. 2:8-10)

Saving Faith: Definition & Scriptural Support
Saving faith is receiving & resting in Christ alone for salvation.

Three aspects:

1. Knowledge - Intellectual - Awareness - "Knowing Trust" (Ps. 25:4-5,8; Ps. 119:15-16)
2. Assent - Relational - Acceptance - "Loving Christ" (James 1:19; John 6:63-69)
3. Trust - Fiducial - Action - "Trusting Christ" (John 3:16; 2 Cor. 5:7; Prov. 3:5)

How much faith is required?

Heb. 12:1-2: Jesus is the author and founder of our faith.

John 15: Abide in Christ

Westminster Confession and Larger Catechism on “Saving Faith”

WCF 14.1 - The grace of faith, by which the elect are enabled to believe to the saving of their souls, is the work of the Spirit of Christ in their hearts, and is ordinarily produced through the ministry of the Word. This faith is increased and strengthened by the same means, and also by the administration of the sacraments and prayer.

WCF 14.2 - By this faith, a Christian believes to be true whatever is revealed in the Word, because of the authority of God himself speaking in it. He also responds differently to what each particular passage contains - obeying the commands, trembling at the threatenings, and embracing the promises of God for this life and that which is to come. But the principal acts of saving faith are accepting, receiving, and resting upon Christ alone for justification, sanctification, and eternal life, by virtue of the covenant of grace.

WCF 14.3 - This faith varies in degrees. It may be weak or strong. It may often, and in many ways, be assailed and weakened, but it gains the victory. It matures in many to the attainment of a full assurance through Christ, who is both the author and the perfector of our faith.

WLC 72 - What is justifying faith? Justifying faith is a saving grace, wrought in the heart of a sinner by the Spirit and word of God, whereby he, being convinced of his sin and misery, and of the disability in himself and all other creatures to recover him out of his lost condition, not only assents to the truth of the promise of the gospel, but received and rested upon Christ and his righteousness, therein held forth, for pardon of sin, and for the accepting and accounting of his person righteous in the sigh of God for salvation.

WLC 73 - How does faith justify a sinner in the sight of God? Faith justifies a sinner in the sight of God, not because of those other graces which do always accompany it, or of good works that are the fruits of it, nor as if the grace of faith, or any act thereof, were imputed to him for his justification; but only as it is an instrument by which he receiveth and applieth Christ and his righteousness.
