Research video 01 for "Residuals (住み・墨)", a new solo work choreographed by Shion Skye Carter.

This video examplifies my interest in physical relationship to objects, as well as a monochromatic colour palette inspired by Japanese calligraphy. These themes, as well as stark images of the “fragmented body” created with objects (e.g. the box in the video), help embody themes of immigration and embedding oneself into unfamiliar surroundings.

As the choreographer and performer, I will be immersing myself in calligraphy lessons to inform movement. The gestures used in calligraphy, the textures, sounds, and colours of ink brushed onto paper. these elements, with all of their nuance and specificity, are what I want to source in creating the performance.

Collaborating artists include dance artists Ziyian Kwan as mentor, and Tomoyo Yamada as dramaturg. Musician Stefan Nazarevich is composing an original score, inspired by the sonic and visual textures of calligraphy. Filmmaker Colin Williscroft will use calligraphy tools to create a dynamic video, to be projected during the performance.
