Quarantine Daydreams (2020) is a short dance-film inspired by Composition C (No. III with Red, Yellow, and Blue) by Piet Mondrian. Prior to the first World War, Mondrian was known for his representational style, with hints of abstraction sprinkled into his aesthetic. Composition C was created in 1935 as a response to the war and is categorized as De Stijl or Neoplasticism in style. Neoplasticism became popular in the Netherlands by artists and architects as a way of redefining or reinventing reality during times of difficulty caused by WWI by reducing, simplifying, and purifying their surrounding environment through art. As an artist I find myself being drawn into art—visual, performative, musical—that allows the artist to reinvent their reality and thought this would be an interesting opportunity to explore this idea through movement and film. My urge to explore social justice, politics, art, and reality is intensified by today's current social and political environment caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Inspired by the geometry, color, simplicity and linearity of Mondrian's original work, Quarantine Daydreams takes the viewer on a journey from the mundane, colorless, anxiety-driving repetition of a day-in-the-life of Covid out into a new world full of color, fresh air, and joyous movement. Direction and Editing: Michaela Neild. Performance and Choreography: Emily Craver. Music: Uman by Kokoroko.
