For Jordon Viera. Rise in Powah. Rest in Peace

The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade was a capitalist-economic holocaust from the 15th to 19th century during which, countless millions of African people, primarily from the central and western parts of the continent, were stolen by European enslavers who then transported them to colonies in North and South America and to Europe. The numbers were so great that Africans who came by way of the enslavement trade became the most numerous Old-World immigrants in both North and South America before the late eighteenth century. Tens of Thousands died along the journey and during enslavement. Never buried. Never put to rest. This period of enslavement is the foundation on which the current wealth of the UK, Europe and North America is built. The cultural rupture to the African continent and its people was so devastating that Black people all over the world are still in deep mourning. Concrete Jungle is an Offering. A Witnessing. An Acknowledgement. A Lamentation. A Sacred Burial. A Ritual-of-Recovery for us all.

Concrete Jungle was filmed in Studio 2 at Goldsmiths University of London on June 26 and 28, 2019 as Part of the 2018/2019 After The Storm MA Performance Making Degree Show.

The Dan Masks
There are two Dan masks in Concrete Jungle. The 350,000 Dan live mostly in the western part of the Côte d’Ivoire and into Liberia, where the land is forested in the south and bordered by a savannah in the north. They make their living from farming cocoa, coffee, rice and manioc. All Dan masks are sacred; they do not represent spirits of the wilderness, they are these spirits. Dan masks are characterized by a concave face, a protruding mouth, high-domed forehead and are often covered in a rich brown patina.
