Pratt St. Salsa Social
I've seen this event happen in front of my apartment many times. I've wanted to do a video of it for a while, but wanted to do it in the right context and the right frame of mind to present it. This takes me back a few years…. When I was in college I studied abroad in Mexico, it was there that I was first enchanted by the beauty, movement and passion of latin dancing. Dancing is a way of life there. They will drag you out on the dance floor or in the street because they want to share that way of life with you. It doesn't matter who you are or where you're coming from. That's why I love this song for the video. "Che Che Colé" and the other expressions in the song originate from an African folk song from Ghana. It's a call and response song that asks people to move around in certain ways. This is mixed with the Spanish, with one of the expressions being, "Si no sabes bailar, yo te enseñare mi hermano" that means "If you don't know how to dance, I'll teach you, my brother." I feel like this is what the Pratt St. Salsa Social is all about. It's people from all different backgrounds and ages coming together to celebrate music and life, and to invite people to share in that celebration. Just like the rich cultural layers that are in the song, this is seen at the event. There is strength and beauty in diversity. I'm glad that it happens on my street and in Hartford.
