An exploration into the relationship between humankind and nature in the face of a global climate crisis and through the lens of hope and possibility.
Synopsis:
The state of the world currently is, to put it simply, a mess. The world is burning, it is drowning, it is breaking. It is a lot to deal with as a concerned citizen. Personally, I am angry, anxious and confused all at the same time. It is overwhelming. Being overwhelmed, however, is not conducive to change. Possibilism is my response to the current climate crisis. The idea of ‘possibilism’ counters the states of mind of optimism and pessimism. Instead of these passive states of being, ‘possibilists’ believe change and opportunity are within the realm of reach but to get there requires hard work and commitment. This film allows the audience to be drawn in by the comforting nature of the beautiful imagery, the consistent structure of the cuts and the calming effect of the music. Once fully present in the experience, the audience begins to notice the contradicting perspectives of the overlaying shots; the juxtaposing subjects of the man-made and natural world; and the layered sound design. These subtleties encourage the spectator to ponder the relationship between humankind and the natural world, and their part in that relationship. Possibilism is inspired by the words and action of climate activist, Luisa Neubauer and has been produced with the hope that it inspires change and hope in its own right.
