Portraits of Unknown Gals is a project consisting of 5 animated GIFS of 'unknown women' from throughout history, as well as a concertina book showing the thought process of the project as it developed from initial sketches to completed animations. I redrew existing 'unknown' portraits - the closest I could get to historically accurate references without a bias or ulterior motive. Maybe, most importantly, it's the closest I could get to accurate references of everyday people. Usually people who aren't often represented or talked about within the western narrative of history. In order to paint the 'everyday' person I have to paint unknown people. Illustrations and animation by Gemma Strachan.
