PV is a rare and chronic blood cancer. It occurs when a single stem cell in the bone marrow develops a mutation, which then leads to an abhorrent over production of blood cells. When you have too many blood cells, it puts you at risk for serious health problems including blood clots, stroke, and heart attack. Over time, PV can lead to a more aggressive blood cancer like myelofibrosis or AML.

A common approach to treating people with this blood cancer is to address the 'blood sludge' with blood thinning medicine and blood letting. But does that impact the true cause of PV?
