"We want peace! We want peace!"

One day after thousands marched at the 35th annual Denver Marade, celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, as well as Dr. King's life and legacy, hundreds of students in the Park Hill neighborhood held their own Marade. Holding signs with hopeful messages inspired by Dr. King's life and legacy, Kindergarteners and first graders marched from Ferguson Park (AKA Turtle Park) to the nearby Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church. Dr. King visited the same church in 1964.

DPS Superintendent Susana Cordova: "'For love will in the end connect us to our neighbors, to our children and to our hearts.' And that's what you all are doing today. You're helping spread the love, you're helping connect ourselves to our neighborhood, and to each other."

Students sang "We Shall Overcome" on the same steps where Dr. King once addressed the Park Hill and Denver community. Retired Denver County Judge Diane Briscoe - whose mother participated in Dr. King's nonviolence movement - called this student-led Marade "a highlight of my life."

Ret. Judge Briscoe: "So I want to encourage you to read a lot, ask questions, and work hard. And then you can carry on the legacy of Martin Luther King to make sure all are treated with fairness and justice."
