Ouroboros is a miniaturized autonomous traffic jam created for the exhibition 'San Diego: The Architecture of Four Ecologies' at the La Jolla Historical Society. The spiral structure is inspired by the ancient symbol of the serpent eating its own tale that represents the cyclicality of constant recreation. Self-driving toy cars travel endlessly around the looping road in a perpetual cycle of computed automation. The cars infrared sensors analyze the black line on the surface and attempt to create predictable paths along it. The automatic movement of the toys cars, echo’s our future selves, unburdened from the labor of our daily commute by opting into the control of networked physically computed vehicles. The toy cars breakdown, their batteries drain out, and small errors accumulate to breakdown the over saturated autonomous system.
