A young man retracing the steps of his father using the diary he wrote on a trip 25 years ago was a story I wanted to tell. Travelling has always been incredible for me, thus that sparked the idea for my short. The reason for the young man’s journey remains unclear until the end of the film where it is hinted at, or revealed, that the father is no longer alive. It was my aim to let the emotions the audience feels at the end be the most incredible part of the film, as opposed to the storyline itself. I did not want to create a story that was surrealistic and literally incredible.
In a previous short I made I explored the devastating effects grief can have on a person, whereas in this film I wanted to show the beautiful side. With help from the music made by my friend Victoria Ward, we were able to create a sense of acceptance towards the father’s death. Instead of melancholy the journey becomes hopeful.
I used a variety of camera angles and shots; the shaky camera movement was used to imitate an onlooker who watched over the young man- the father who appears in the penultimate shot. The last shot, an extreme long shot, was my favourite as it conveyed both the fascinating journey of the young man and it makes him look very lonely which provokes sympathy from the audience.
I was the director, screenwriter, camera operator and editor of this short, my family played as actors and my friend Victoria wrote the music for it according to my ideas.
