Open Space project 2020-2021
Funded by Arts Council of Northern Ireland & Social Enterprise Northern Ireland
New movement and choreographic work took place 2020-2021 year online as part of the “Open Space" project led by various artists, including Cliodhna Doherty, Nina Dibb, Steve Batts - Echo Echo Dance Theatre Company, Suzannah McCreight, Rachel Harris in partnership with CLI Studios artists, KidKast Theatre School and KNC Performing Arts Company.
The project was delivered fully online through live workshops allowing the participants to explore the body movement in their choreographic process.
Homeplace Solos – led by Steve Batts, attracted 8 young people to find new ways of expressing themselves through the movement and create their solo at home or side-specific places. Young dancers tell their personal stories of adapting through change with a series of solo pieces.
Chairs & Stairs - choreography by Suzannah McCreight, 16 dancers exploring body movement restricted by chairs and stairs, to reflect the fact rehearsals take place at the participants’ homes rather than in a studio, transformed to the outside setting to dance together after the national lockdown.
Dancing Diary / I Dance through quarantine – led by Cliodhna Doherty, who worked with 6 dancers interested in fine art, guiding them through creating dance diaries and preparing for their final duets with the dancer's chosen piece of artwork. 3 duets (siblings) created exciting pieces co-choreographed with Cliodhna at their homes while Cliodhna captured their body movement in 10 colourful painting and numerous sketches. The artwork is planned to be exhibited to the public once the restrictions allowed.
Joining them are musical director Vladimir Samsonik, musicians James Anderson, Neil Burns, Rohan Armstrong, and composer Anselm McDonnell. They created unique pieces of music, improvising and recording their creations for the project.
The 2020-2021 Open Space brought together young people from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to dance together while making new friends and learning new skills.
The Open Space project is a fantastic opportunity for young dancers to work with professional choreographers, musicians that are well known to the Northern Ireland dance and music scene.
During the year, Dance Associate supported various local artists in dance, fine art and photography projects, providing them with space and equipment hire in-kind – building solid relationships for the future.
