Choreo 3 week 3-4

For the past two weeks, we have been in the process of creating a choreographic phrase based on the foundation of a task-based partner improvisation exercise. We started with exploring improvisations with different facets of touch. The two facets of touch we played with were hand on shoulder and palm on top of palm. For me, the hand on shoulder was easier to connect with physically because I felt more connected with my partner throughout my whole body. With the palm on palm facet I found it difficult to share the weight of my arm fully with my partner and I felt that the range of motion for our improvisation was somewhat limited. Because of this, when we got to chose with our new partner which facet, we wanted to play with, we choose the hand on the shoulder. From there we played with adding descriptive words to our improvisation with the facet of touch we chose. This obviously added a whole new challenge because we had to maintain the task of keeping the facet of touch while still showing the qualities of the descriptive words through our movement.

After playing with this improvisation, we created a one-minute phrase based off of what we discovered. Although it was challenging to keep both of the tasks in mind, I found the structure choreographic task to be helpful. For me it is often really difficult to come up with choreography on the spot especially with someone else who may have different movement values than me. However, in this case, with the parameters of touch and the descriptive words, I was able to put my movement values aside. This made it much easier to develop choreography without worrying about what it looked like because the task wasn’t for it to look a specific way. Going right from the structured improvisation to choreographing was also helpful to me because me and Amanda used the flow of our improvisation to find moments that we wanted to add to our phrase. The next step of this process was the sharing with other groups. I found this experience very validating because the groups we were sharing with were able to guess our descriptive words without us telling them. The discussions also helped me see how our choreography had created a story line unintentionally.

The final aspect of this choreographic study was breaking it apart based off of different prompts. This was a somewhat difficult experience, especially at first. There were a lot of prompts that we had to fit into a one-minute phrase of choreography, and I was really happy with the outcome of the phrase as it already was. Because of this, adding the prompts felt more like ruining the choreography instead of refining it. However, after we were able to fit all of the prompts in, the experience was a little different. Adding all of the prompts added some depth to the phrase and made it longer which is a good choreographic skill to have when creating choreography, so I appreciated that. It also changed the mood and storyline of the piece. I think this could be a negative or a positive depending on perspective. Although It was good to experience what different prompts could do to the choreography, I think If I were to do this on my own, I would disrupt the original choreography less and add prompts that still maintained the original intentions of the choreography.
