“Olas Portola - Fuente Seca” translates to “Waves in a Dry Fountain,” a rotating outdoor sculpture by Kinetic Artist, Jeffery Laudenslager, on the corner of Marsh and Higuera in San Lusi Obispo, California.

This piece was installed with Light Artist, Deanne Sabeck’s addition of lights and dichroic glass in 2017 at which time I made a short video called “Gravity Fountain,” a digitally processed abstraction of this sculpture.

Good news, “Gravity Fountain" will be screened this Friday (1.17.2020) at the KINO KLUB SPLIT in Split, Croatia.

My good friend, Prof. Gwendolyn Audrey Foster selected my "Gravity Fountain" to be in this show she is curating. Thank you Gwendolyn for your kind attention.

This recognition so inspired me that I wanted to explore another presentation of this material and wish to express my gratitude to both Gwendolyn and her husband Prof. Wheeler Winston Dixon for their continued encouragement, support, and friendship.

This new version, “Olas Portola - Fuente Seca” blends the sky view of the rotating limbs with their shadows in the dry pond as to capture Jeffery’s inspiring vision of Tai Chi movement via his skillful and graceful engineering.

The fact that the rotation of Jeffery’s crescent shaped wings are powered by the wind only (there are no motors) drew my attention to this fine engineering of balance. Each segment is designed to be near enough to the tipping point to engage an endless non-repeating sequence of motion based on the changes of the velocity of the wind as low as 5 mph.
