We go into the woods and parks to get away from the hustle and clutter of the urban landscape, to get away from the human element. The peaceful sounds of water flowing downstream, birds chirping in the same trees that the wind whispers seem to soothe and focus our thoughts to simpler more existential priorities. We need natural spaces to thrive.
This video highlights the environmental impacts of liter on a local level. Set in the Metro Parks west of Cleveland, Ohio, two questions are asked. Is it so hard to pick up a handful of trash on your way out of the woods? Should it be left for those who care to clean up after those who don’t?
Trash does not belong in the woods and in our waterways. It should not be left to for others to clean up. Each of us needs to have basic respect for our communities and fellow humans. That respect should command our responsibility in a way that keeps litter out of our natural environment. If everyone did their part to respect nature and their neighbors the woods would be spotless. Promoting the health of our environment directly promotes our own mental and physical wellbeing.
If you live in Ohio and would like to organize a community recycling program the Ohio EPA offer s grants to gather the gear necessary to do just that.
